Handling the end of maintenance for a license

Introduction

Some license types include maintenance usually granting additional benefits like the right to use any new published version. This maintenance is limited by time.

In general there are two scenarios for and end-of-maintenance use case:

  1. You renew the maintenance
  2. You do not renew the maintenance

If case you do not renew the maintenance, there are also two options based on the publisher's terms and conditions:

  1. The publisher of the license grants you the right to continue using the latest available version of the licensed software at the time the maintenance ends.
In this case use the action "Handle End-of-Maintenance" on the corresponding license as explained below.
  2. The publisher defines that your license becomes void. In this case the expired license is not effective and cannot be used for entitlements anymore.
In this case no further action is required here. Keep your license in status "expired" for documental purposes.

Renew or terminate maintenance

In case you renew the maintenance or you terminate and the publisher grants you usage rights for a specific version the action "Handle End-of-Maintenance" supports you to do the corresponding changes in your license inventory.

Conditions

The action "Handle End-of-Maintenance" requires following conditions:

  • Type of selected license includes maintenance: "Full Version With Maintenance", "Maintenance" or "Maintenance Renewal"
  • Selected license in status "Used", "Unused" or "Expired"
  • Selected license is either unlimited or is NOT used as a base license for other licenses

Options

The first page of the wizard displays the read-only information about the licenses and provides an opportunity to select whether the maintenance is.

  1. Terminated entirely
  2. Renewed entirely
  3. Renewed partly for

Option "Renew partly" is not available if selected license has only 1 usage right or is unlimited.

Terminate maintenance entirely

In case of entire or partial termination, you have to select the Software Product version to which the ended maintenance license will be converted on the next page. The system will suggest to use the latest version but according to the date of termination you may have to select another version.

Renew maintenance entirely

In case of entire renewal, specify details about the corresponding maintenance renewal purchase on the next two pages. You may use the publisher part number (SKU) to find entries in your license inventory or in License Intelligence Service (LIS) catalog. Provide all information for the maintenance renewal license - especially the date of expiration.

Renew/terminate maintenance partly

On the first page of wizard, specify amount of usage rights you keep under maintenance.

Select the Software Product version to which the ended maintenance license will be converted on the next page. The system will suggest to use the latest version but according to the date of termination you may have to select another version.

Specify details about the corresponding maintenance renewal purchase on the next two pages. You may use the publisher part number (SKU) to find entries in your license inventory or in License Intelligence Service (LIS) catalog. Provide all information for the maintenance renewal license - especially the date of expiration.

The wizard will create two licenses with different usage rights, according to number specified on the first wizard page:

  1. One license of type Maintenance Renewal or Maintenance keeping usage rights under maintenance.
  2. One license of type License Conversion converting remaining usage rights from the terminated maintenance part to a license for a specific product version.
