Service Lifecycle


The ITIL service portfolio contains the status of all services that it currently offers, offered in the past and also those that may be simply 'pipe dreams', 'nice to have' or ideas for the future. The portfolio is comprised of three sections:

  • Operational Services
  • Service Pipeline
  • Retired Services

As a service progresses through the service lifecycle, it is allocated a relevant status:

  • Requirements: Set of outline requirements is received from the business/IT for a new or changed service.
  • Defined: Set of requirements for a new service is assessed, defined and documented and the service level requirements (SLRs) are produced.
  • Analyzed: Set of requirements for a new service is analyzed/prioritized.
  • Approved: Set of requirements for a new service is finalized/authorized.
  • Chartered: New service requirements are communicated, resources and budget are allocated.
  • Designed: The new service and its components are designed and procured as required.
  • Developed: The service and its components are developed or harvested as required.
  • Built: The service and its components are being built.
  • Tested: The service and its components are being tested.
  • Released: The service and its components are being released.
  • Operational: The service and its components are operational within the live environment.
  • Blocked: The service and its components are currently blocked for any reason. (This status is not part of the ITIL process but will be kept for compatibility with earlier versions of Matrix42 Service Catalog. Services with the Blocked status are still part of the Matrix42 Service Catalog).
  • Retired: The service and its constituent components are retired.

A service can be retired at any time, especially when it is progressing as a project in the pipeline phase. In the future, these services may be re-initiated and follow the service lifecycle again.
