Settings relevant for creation of license requirements

There is a number of settings that influence the license entitlement and must be configured for the entitlement to run smoothly.

Settings for software products

Status

The system automatically creates license requirement only for software products whose status is included in the Software Product Status Values Relevant for License Compliance setting.

Change of license model with downgrades

Different software products may have different license models. If a license requirement could be entitled by downgrading a license from another software product with a different license model, adjusting the license model of the license requirement can be automated by enabling the automatic change of license model with downgrades.

Consolidation of older software versions (side-by-side consolidation)

Some publishers allow in their licensing terms, that multiple instances of the software with different versions may be installed/used in parallel by the consumer of the license. In such cases older versions can be consolidated automatically by the system if the corresponding checkbox is selected on the Downgrades tab of all involved software products. The system will then consolidate license requirements for older software versions if a license requirement for a newer version exists, that is contained in the Downgrade from list.

Downgrade consolidation of license requirements from remote usage

There are cases when a consumer is using a software product both locally and remotely. If the software of the local copy is different from the remote copy (e.g. different edition or version), it depends on the licensing terms if the user needs a license for each product or just for the local one. If the terms define that the remote copy is included in the entitlement of the local copy, because there are downgrade rights from the remotely used version, selecting the Consolidate according to downgrade options checkbox on the License Requirements > Remote Use Entitlement tab of the software product dialog enables the automatic consolidation. By default this checkbox is not selected.

Creating license requirements from fingerprints

The system will automatically create license requirements from fingerprints only if the corresponding checkbox is selected on the License Requirements > Fingerprints tab of the relevant software product.

Consolidation of license requirements from remote usage for second copy devices

Some publishers grant a second-copy right for portable devices. It means that if the same user is a principal owner of two devices at least one of which is a laptop, the license requirement for the laptop is automatically consolidated as a second copy and therefore does not require additional usage rights. In general, those devices however are not allowed to access the same software remotely, e.g. on a Terminal Server. Therefore, there is an option to enable or disable remote access right with second-copy devices.

With remote usage tracking enabled, the second copy consolidation is deactivated by default. You can activate it by selecting the Entitled Second Copy checkbox on the License Requirements > Remote Use Entitlement tab of the software product dialog. As a result, the second copy consolidation will also consider license requirements from remote usage.

Settings for consumers

There are three types of consumers of a license requirement: a person, an asset, and an anonymous consumer that consists of organization unit, location and consumer.

Automatic license requirements are created for persons and assets in eligible statuses only.

The lists of statuses are defined in the following settings: Asset Status Values Relevant for License ComplianceComplex System Status Values Relevant for License CompliancePerson Status Values Relevant for License Compliance.
