LIS Service Levels

Matrix42 License Management is one of the leading tools on the market for Software Asset Management solutions. It helps companies to record, manage and optimize their software licenses. One of the central routine tasks in handling the tool and the raw data arising during operation is the identification and normalization of the installed applications as well as the purchased licenses.

The License Intelligence Service (LIS) supports organizations in this task and provides a comprehensive base of reference data that is regularly updated and expanded. In essence, the reference data contains a standardized "software repository", which forms the structure of the license balance in the SAM tool. This repository contains approximately 7,000 software publishers and over 65,000 software products (as of January 2020). In addition, there are almost 400 license models that are used to calculate the license requirement.

Depending on the service level, recognition patterns for installed applications (fingerprints) are provided beyond this master data. With this data, captured applications are evaluated according to licensing law and assigned to the appropriate entry in the software repository (software recognition or normalization). The differences of the service levels regarding the scope of software detection are explained in the chapter "Levels of Service".

In addition, LIS supplies catalogue articles for purchased licenses in order to identify them via their manufacturer article number (SKU) and assign them to the software repository (license recognition). The scope of this data is also determined by the respective service level.

In addition to the supply of reference data, since January 2020 the LIS has included extended metadata for software products, an online library with license conditions, individual assistance with questions about software licensing and support in using the SAM tool. However, these additional services are not available in all service levels. For more details see the chapter "Levels of Service".

Mode of Operation

The maintenance of the data provided with the service is carried out by a dedicated team at Matrix42. The inclusion of data in the inventory is initiated in various ways:

·    Customers transmit the application signatures (fingerprints) and licenses not recognized in their SAM tool to the central LIS database via LIS Online Update.

·    Publishers update their price lists and license terms

·    Customers request the extension, adaptation or correction of the data stock in defined details.

The Matrix42 LIS team reviews the new data records or queries and adds required information to the database after thorough examination and any additional research that may be necessary. At the end of each calendar month, a new version of the database will be released, which eligible customers can download according to their service level.

If customers ask for assistance with licensing questions or the use of the SAM tool, a member of the LIS team will contact the respective customer to clarify the open questions.

The License Intelligence Service is activated via a license certificate, which is deployed on the customer's application server for the Software Asset Management solution:

  • Certificate for Service Level "Basic" = m42ComplianceMasterData
  • Certificate for service level "Standard" and "Premium" = m42LicenseIntelligenceService

During operation, the distinction between the "Standard" and "Premium" service levels is made by settings with the customer account linked to the active certificate on the central LIS server. This customer account is managed by the Matrix42 LIS team. If a customer changes from the "Standard" service level to the "Premium" service level (or vice versa), this is done by changing the settings of the customer account on the central LIS server accordingly. No changes are necessary on the customer system. However, we recommend that after changing the service level on the customer account, a complete LIS data package is downloaded and imported.

LIS Basic

LIS Basic is no longer offered. However, customers of this service level with old contracts will still receive support.

In this service level, customers receive the part of the reference data referred to as master data. It includes all publishers, all software products and the complete inventory of license models.

In this service level, customers passively benefit from updates and additions to software products and license models that were made for customers of other service levels. Requests for data additions cannot be made in this service level.

LIS Standard

In this service level, customers receive all data which is also provided in the "Basic" service level (see above).

In addition, reference data for software and license recognition are provided, as far as they have been assigned to the "prioritized" publishers:

  1. Acronis
  2. Adobe
  3. Apple
  4. Autodesk
  5. Corel
  6. McAfee
  7. Microsoft
  8. Oracle
  9. Symantec
  10. Trend Micro

In this service level, customers actively participate in the updates for LISTED publishers. This means that these customers can informally request additions to the data provided (software products, license models, fingerprints and catalog items).  Inquiries should be made either via the LIS Update or by e-mail to

In addition, customers of this service level passively benefit from updates and additions for software products and license models of unlisted publishers, which were made for customers of the service level "Premium". However, fingerprints and catalog articles of non-listed publishers are excluded. Requests for data additions for non-listed publishers cannot be made in this service level.

LIS Premium

This service level is offered as subscription on the Matrix42 Marketplace. It is available in three different versions, which are made up of different modules:

·    DATA

Regardless of the chosen variant, subscribers enjoy personal support at the beginning and during the term of LIS Premium as well as a separate VIP support queue, which is served on a priority basis.

The exact contents and service descriptions of the modules in Service Level Premium can be viewed on the Matrix42 Marketplace. There you can also book this service level directly.

Basic module “DATA”

With the basic module "DATA", customers receive all data that is also provided in the "Standard" service level (see above) as well as supplementary metadata for the software products relevant to them (i.e. used or licensed):

·    Categorization according to UNSPSC (external link)

·    Categorization according to eCl@ss* (external link)

·    Categorization according to ECCN (external link)

·    Release date

·    Expiration date for general support (end of support)

·    Expiration date for extended support (end of life)

In this service level, customers actively participate in the updates for all publishers relevant to them. This means that these customers can informally request additions to the data provided (software products, license models, fingerprints and catalog items).  Inquiries should be made either via the LIS Update or by e-mail to

eCl@ss data is subject to a copyright of eCl@ss e.V. Cologne, which limits the distribution. The provision of the eCl@ss categories via LIS requires a separate licensing, which is the responsibility of the customer.

Optional module “TERMS”

With the optional "TERMS" module, LIS Premium contains not only extended data supply but also assistance with license conditions. This module is only available as an add-on for the “DATA” module.

·    Access to a library of product licensing documents

·    Individual determination of the license conditions of a software (EULA check)

·    Individual clarification of the licensing treatment of certain usage scenarios

Optional module “TOOL”

In addition, LIS Premium offers assistance in handling the SAM tool with the optional module "TOOL". This module is only available as an add-on the “DATA” and “TERMS” module.

·    Individual coaching mapping of specific licensing scenarios in the SAM tool

·    Individual support in the creation of special license models

Data Privacy

Within the scope of the LIS Online Update, unrecognized applications as well as unassigned licenses can be transferred to the central LIS database. You can restrict or completely disable this transmission by configuring the data provider in your SAM tool.

After checking and processing, the transmitted data is added to the database by Matrix42 and made available to all connected customers according to their service level. This data contains neither personal nor company-related information.

If, as described above, you restrict or prevent the transmission of your data to be clarified, you accept that Matrix42 may not be able to process information that is important specifically for you. You then participate only passively and indirectly from the data updates made for other customers.

The following is a list of all attributes that are transferred to Matrix42 as part of the Online Update:

  • Manufacturer of the application
  • Name of the application
  • Version of the application
  • Inventory type (e.g. Empirum, SCCM)
  • Is Installed (yes/no)

  • Manufacturer Part Number (SKU)
  • Labeling of the license in your system
  • Type of the license (e.g. full version, update version)

We guarantee that we do not transmit any information about computers, users or the number of installations or acquired usage rights. Such information is not required for the classification of applications and licenses. However, you should make sure that you do not enter any sensitive information in the free text of the license label. If you need to do this for process requirements, you should disable the transfer of unclassified licenses.

If you are interested to understand how your data is transmitted safely over the Matrix42 Data Gateway architecture, read this article.

Service Conditions

You may use the delivered LIS data, provided information and assistance for your license management purposes only. Any other use within your company and the passing on of this data outside your company limits as well as use for the purposes of third parties is not permitted.

Matrix42 shall decide at its own discretion on the scope and term of the data provided. Requests for the inclusion of data records that are not yet included in the database will be processed as quickly as possible, depending on the utilization of the available personnel resources.

Matrix42 reserves the right to modify the list of publishers relevant for the Service Level Standard at any time.

Liability Disclaimer

Matrix42 compiles all data and information provided by the License Intelligence Service to the best of its knowledge and belief, but does not guarantee that it is up-to-date, complete or correct.

We expressly point out that each software publisher has different contractual regulations, which cannot all be taken into account in the data provided.

The use of our data does not release you from the responsibility to check the effects of the calculations based on it and to make manual corrections if necessary.

Questions & Answers

Are there any requirements for the use of LIS Premium and what would they be?

You must meet the following requirements:

·    Authorization for Service Level Standard

·    Using product version 9.1.3 or higher (Software Asset Management)

·    Updating LIS data via an online connection (data provider)

What does it mean for us that for legal reasons we are not allowed to automatically download and process data from the Internet?

You can manually download the LIS data from the Marketplace and import it into the SAM tool.

However, the scope of the data is limited to the Service Level Standard. The data contained in the Service Level Premium is currently only available via an online update. If we will support an offline connection is unfortunately not yet foreseeable.

Another disadvantage of offline updating is the fact that you can't submit your undetected applications and unassigned licenses to the LIS team.

We use LIS Basic. What do I have to do if we want to use LIS Standard or LIS Premium?

You must first upgrade to LIS Standard. This is done by adjusting the licensing of the Matrix42 products you use accordingly. Please contact your Matrix42 sales representative.

After you are entitled to the Service Level Standard, you can optionally book LIS Premium.

We use LIS standard. What are the consequences for me if we do not choose LIS Premium?

The guaranteed benefits in the Service Level Standard have not changed. Out of fairness to those customers who have booked LIS Premium, we adhere to the definitions of the service level, though.

Unlike before, data updates therefore no longer contain any data that is outside the service level. This adapted handling also applies to customer enquiries via Matrix42 Support regarding the addition of certain catalogue items (SKU) to the data. We ask for your understanding.

We have always received updates for software and license detection for other publishers. Why not anymore?

The warranted scope of service has always included a limitation to the delivery of this data for the 10 listed publishers. In the past, customers who wanted to have fingerprints from other publishers assigned to them purchased paid services. These updates were provided by Matrix42 voluntarily and free of charge to all other customers.

We want to offer the comprehensive classification of fingerprints to every customer at a significantly lower cost. Therefore, we have integrated the previous service into a standardized product and offer it - together with extended data on the software products - as LIS Premium.

Out of fairness to those customers who pay money to receive more data for software and license recognition, we unfortunately have to refrain from sharing this data with all customers in the Service Level Standard voluntarily and free of charge.

Where can I read the binding service description of the "Standard" service level?

The binding service description can be found in the "Product Usage Guideline". You can download this document from our GTC page ( on the Internet. This description is binding unless you have made a written side agreement in your contract.

Can we test LIS Premium for a limited period of time before we decide?

LIS Premium is not a product, but a standardized service. It corresponds in essence as well as in the technical delivery to the free "Standard" service level. If you would like to get to know the License Intelligence Service, we recommend that you use this free option until you have gained an idea of the potential benefits for your license management.

We want to opt for LIS Premium. What's it is going to cost me?

Visit the Matrix42 Marketplace and find out about the details and prices of the subscriptions offered. Please note that you must log in there to see the prices.

What is the minimum subscription period for LIS Premium?

LIS Premium must be licensed for a minimum period of 12 months. Once this period has elapsed, the subscription is automatically renewed for another 12 months.

What does it mean for us when we enter LIS Premium and the number of applications that are still unrecognized by us at this time far exceeds the limitation of the “DATA” module?

As a preliminary remark, the limitations of the “DATA” module were designed to be sufficient during operation. Of course, when entering LIS Premium, it may be that the legacy of unrecognized applications is very high. Here we proceed specifically in coordination with you. On the one hand, applications that have been recorded but are no longer installed on your system do not need to be classified. This wouldn’t add value to your business. We can approach the data sets remaining after this filtering in two alternatives:

·    Option 1: We prioritize dedicated publishers on the applications that are important to you and your license balance and spread the work over a longer period of time so that you don't have any problems with the given limitation.

·    Option 2: You buy a “DATA” extension service via a corresponding additional contingent on the Matrix42 Marketplace and we will process all open data for you.

How can we extend the services limited in the Premium Subscription?

The limitations of the “DATA”, “TERMS” and “TOOL” modules serve to implement a fair use policy based on an economic calculation of the services. If you wish to extend the limits, corresponding services are available on the Matrix42 Marketplace, which you can buy at the appropriate time as required.

What happens if we cancel our premium subscription?

There will be no changes to your local LIS dataset. However, with further updates to the software and license recognition, you will only receive data that has been assigned to the prioritized publishers.

Also, if these options were part of your subscription, you will no longer have access to the licensing library, receive support for licensing terms or coaching with tool usage.
