Introduction into Azure Hybrid Benefit compliance

Overview

Essentially, the Azure Hybrid Benefit extension calculates the usage of Azure Hybrid Benefit by each Azure tenant.

For the Azure Hybrid Benefit extension to work correctly, you need to configure and execute the Azure Inventory data provider first. The Azure Inventory data provider imports data from an Azure tenant you have chosen, and then the Azure Hybrid Benefit extension can be used to check the compliance.

If you wish to measure the Azure Hybrid Benefit compliance for several Azure tenants, you are required to add the corresponding number of configurations for the Azure Inventory data provider.

Calculating the usage of Azure Hybrid Benefit

After the Azure Hybrid Benefit extension is installed, you can find the Azure Hybrid Benefit Compliance Activation engine activation under Services &Processes > Engine Activations in the Administration application. This activation starts the Azure Hybrid Benefit processing workflow.

Execute the Activate action for the engine activation to trigger the update of the Azure Hybrid Benefit compliance. The update includes:

  • Setting relations between Azure tenant and its virtual machines and resources,
  • Creating a separate Azure Hybrid Benefit object for Windows and a separate Azure Hybrid Benefit object for SQL for each Azure tenant that has corresponding resources and VMs,
  • Calculating usage rights that are consumed by resources and virtual machines of each Azure Hybrid Benefit object.

You can configure the schedule for this engine activation to run automatically.  For details, please refer to Engine activations.

Assigning licenses for Azure Hybrid Benefit usage

Azure Hybrid Benefit objects are located under Purchased Licenses > Azure Hybrid Benefit in the Licenses applications.

You can review each object to check how many usage rights are consumed by different types of resources.

To ensure the compliance, you need to assign appropriate licenses to Azure Hybrid Benefit objects by using the Assign Licenses action.

Immediately after the licenses are assigned, the compliance of an Azure Hybrid Benefit object is updated.
