Android Guide II: Connect a device

Android Enrollment

For every enrollment on Android devices a third party application is used to connect the device to the Mobile Device Management. This third party application is called a Device Policy Identifier. Matrix42's DPC name is Matrix42 Silverback Companion and is available on Google Play. Android offers three different device management options.

Activation of Device Administrator (Legacy Management)

Has been the most common setup for Android devices and is already deprecated by Google since 2017 and all customers are encouraged to move or start with enrolling devices as Device Owner (for corporate owned devices) and with Work Profiles for private owned devices. The following Guide will proceed with this legacy management option in order to the target of Getting Started Guides. After finalization of this Android guide, you should directly start with the Android Enterprise Integration and enroll devices only with this newer management options.

For now, you can proceed with create your enrollment token

Activation of the Device Owner

Activation of Device Owner requires Android Enterprise. It is Google newest business approach and intend for corporate owned devices. With an activated Device Owner, administrators gain more control over devices.  Another benefit is the device activation from the Out-of-the-box experience with a DPC Identifier enrollment or with Android Zero Touch Enrollment / Knox Mobile Enrollment. Administrators also will gain control over allowing adding personal accounts to devices for corporate and personally enabled scenarios.

Review our Android Enterprise Integration Guide for further information

Activation of Work Profile

Activation of Work Profiles requires Android Enterprise. It was formerly known as Android for Work and was Google's first business approach to separate private and corporate data with containerization. Users will receive a work container and a managed play store which is controlled by the management system and is separated from the personal profile. Work Profiles are intended to use within a bring your own device scenario.
