Update

 Overview

To perform update from earlier versions for Matrix42 Software Asset & Service Management, you should run the .exe file as administrator. You may need new license keys for the update.

Prerequisites

Clarify Customizing Changes

Clarify that the documentation about customizing changes of your system is complete and up-to-date:

  • Configurative changes in the Administration workspace, such as data definitions, tabulators, etc.
  • Manual changes of the databases (DB triggers, DB indexes, etc.)

All manual changes of the databases of Matrix42 Software Asset & Service Management may interfere with the update process. This also includes database performance optimizations that have been applied by using the Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine Tuning Advisor. To ensure correct updates, please revert such changes before the update and restore them after the update, if necessary.

  • Changed binaries (DLL files)
  • Changed/additional theme for the Matrix42 Self Service Portal
  • Changed portal pages (ASCX files)
  • Changed script files (e.g., .js)
  • Changed import definitions (DTS files)
  • Changes in configuration files (e.g., sps.config, web.config)

If Matrix42 Consulting customized your system, then you should find the following functionality for documenting customizing changes at the Administration workspace:

Please also use this functionality to check for existing customizing changes and to complete your documentation.

If Matrix42 Consulting or Matrix42 Implementation Partner made customizing changes, please ask your contact person for specification and updatability of the changes.

For future product updates it will be useful to create a checklist with all customizing changes to ensure that all changes are covered by testing procedures.

Test the Update in the Test Environment

Perform the planned update on a test environment that is as similar as possible to the current state of production environment. If you do not have such environment, please refer to the Server Migration Guide for more information about setting up a new environment and migrating the application to it.
Perform a functional test with highest care. Please note that all areas should be touched by your tests to ensure that the application is running properly:

  • Matrix42 Software Asset & Service Management Console
  • Matrix42 Self Service Portal
  • All important customizings

  1. Back up the %programfiles%\Matrix42\Matrix42 Workplace Management directory.
  2. Please pay special attention to the web.config file, as you may need to reapply the contained configuration to the application after the update procedure.
